Orville Henry Gibson was an American luthier who founded the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Company, revolutionizing stringed instrument design.
Orville Henry Gibson (1856–1918) revolutionized the construction of mandolins and guitars with innovative carved-top designs and aesthetic detailing. In 1902, he established the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan, setting new standards in instrument craftsmanship. His patents introduced features such as arched tops and multi-piece soundboard bracing that enhanced tone and projection. Under his leadership, Gibson instruments gained popularity among musicians and paved the way for the company’s legacy in producing quality guitars. Although Gibson’s health declined, his vision endured as the brand became synonymous with iconic string instruments.
